Carl Hester, MBE and Olympic Gold Medalist and dressage rider, shares his experience of the Royal Windsor Horse Show. The Royal Windsor Horse Show, is the only show in the UK to host international competitions in Showjumping, Dressage, Showing, Driving and Endurance. The show has something for everyone, horse lovers, foodies as well as an amazing verity of shopping. Carl has a particular love of Windsor as it is such a friendly and welcoming event.

Carl is based in the beautiful Gloucestershire countryside and in this documentary he brings the world of dressage alive and takes the audience through the technical aspects behind the sport of Dressage. From “keeping a horse happy and sound and actually ready to do the competing”, to making sure the horse has a perfect walk, trot and canter. All areas of schooling are what motivate Carl to “get out of bed and train horses” in preparation for the UK’s ultimate 5* event, The Royal Windsor Horse Show.

As well as competing himself, Carl has trained and mentored some of the best riders the UK has seen, including Charlotte Dujardin CBE, elite British dressage rider and triple Gold Medalist at the London 2012 and Rio 2016 Olympics Games, European Champion, World Champion and holds all three World Records in the sport of Dressage. Charlotte has been working with Carl since 2007, when he offered her a job as a groom. Charlotte’s horse Valegro were part of the Gold medal winning team at the 2011 European Championships in Rotterdam on their Championship debut. She rode her first Grand Prix test in January 2011 with Valegro, and won numerous titles from European, and World Champion to three Olympic Individual Gold medals as well as a team Silver. However last year her beloved ‘Valegro’ retired, but this wasn’t the end for Charlotte, she is now training with an amazing new mare called ‘Mount St John Freestyle”.

Last year Carl and his horse Barolo demonstrated at the Royal Windsor Horse Show, this year Carl is particularly excited to be actually competing with Barolo this year. Carl explains how crucial it is to make sure there is a “perfect partnership between a horse and a rider” and making them into “supreme athletes”.
