Automotive journalist Henry Catchpole, of Evo Magazine and Carfection fame, takes us on a journey through Morocco as he tackles a stage of the infamous Paris Dakar Rally in a standard road going Nissan Navara pickup. Produced in association with DriveTribe, Henry provides the perfect voice for explaining just what made the Paris Dakar so special and why he longs for it to one day return to its natural home.
A rally nut for as long as he can remember, Henry’s love of the Dakar is embodied by two legends from his youth. 4 times Paris Dakar winner Ari Vatanen and British Rally legend, the late, great, Colin McRae. Indeed it is McRae who is the inspiration for this trip in the Navara. McRae himself competed in the race going version of this incredible capable off roader from Nissan, winning 4 stages of the Dakar in his 2 years of competition (2004-05).
The Navara, with Catchpole at the wheel, tackles gigantic sand dunes, epic flats and rock strewn tracks as we are given a spectacular tour of some of the most challenging terrain in Morocco. Along the way we have the shear fortune to encounter the Peugeot 3008 DKR, testing its mettle in preparation for the modern Dakar in South America. Next we are heading deep into the desert to pitch camp for the night and reminisce of the time the night air was filled with the roar of engines and the clunk and clatter of mechanics feverishly working through the night to ensure their cars were ready to tackle the next gruelling stage of the rally.
In this award nominated film (London Motor Film Festival 2016) Henry Catchpole’s natural enthusiasm for his subject shines through and makes you long to take on the Dakar for yourself!
